“More than a Gym”
Before joining the YMCA, my children, Alexander and Holden, were not involved in sports. The only thing my workout DVDs did was collect dust and swimming was a rare occasion.
I wanted to join the Y for a long time before we did. I wanted my children to learn good sportsmanship, for me to be a healthier mother, for exercise and nutrition to be ingrained in our lives, and for us to make memories doing so together. I looked into joining the Y but I just couldn’t fit it in the budget. I think it was sometime around my thyroid cancer diagnosis that I realized I needed to stop putting off my health. I spoke with a friend who told me that the Y had financial assistance so I checked into what I had to do to apply for it.
We joined as soon as we were approved for financial assistance. I quickly enrolled the boys in sports and I began learning a lot on my fitness journey. It wasn’t long before we started making new friends, joining classes, and taking swim lessons. Since then my parents have also joined the Y. They especially enjoyed pickleball this winter. Alexander and Holden love to swim and see Jacob, their favorite Live Yers teacher. They enjoy participating in several sports and I love the spin, Barre and other classes. We have also gained things we weren’t expecting to, like a sense of community and a love for peoples’ differences.
In the future I see my family becoming stronger and healthier versions of ourselves. We plan to continue to use the Y’s resources to help us on that journey in any way we can. I look forward to instilling the values the Y stands for into my growing toddlers.
Thanks to the Y we are a better us, which makes us a better family. We are so blessed to be a part of the Y and are very thankful for it.
